Since the Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices workbook was introduced to the wine industry in fall 2002, more than 140 self-assessment workshops have been held throughout 24 counties covering all the major wine growing regions in California. Vintners and growers meet together to review the workbook and use the self-assessment criteria to evaluate their vineyard and winery operations. More than 1,100 vineyards and wineries have participated in the workshops and more than half have submitted their evaluation forms to CSWA.
CSWA, Wine Institute and CAWG have issued the first statewide benchmarking report, "California Wine Community Sustainability Report" in 2004, using the data collected from the workbook evaluation forms. Future reports will detail progress made in sustainable winegrowing, and indicate increased participation by the California wine community. The accuracy of these reports depends on submitted data.
